Commission for a birthday present…

I was asked to create a piece for a birthday present, and wanted to create something that was beautiful, tactile and that I’ve never created before. I’ve always been interested in the golden ratio that’s found in nature and wanted to model this pattern on a nautilus shell.

How it all came together

I asked my customer about what colours they associate with the person receiving the gift and created several marbled paper pieces with those colours. I then used my favourite hexagon hole punch to make as many of these as I needed. Finally I assembled the nautilus shape slowly and carefully using double sided tape, after some trial and error using pins and glue. It seemed the tape held the strongest and gave me the desired effect for this project.
