Why I made it

This was a special piece I put together for someone close to me who lent me their Nintendo Switch during one of my many periods of social isolation during the pandemic…*shudder*. Yes, we all remember those difficult days, and one of the things that made my isolation much better was being able to explore the world of Zelda on the switch. The piece on the bottom left was the original one I made (process is described on the right). This inspired me to create a second Link piece for another friend who loves Zelda as well (bottom right). For this piece, I wanted it to look as if Link was jumping out of a portal.

How I made it

I chose a marble piece that expressed the whimsy, curiousity, and troublesome nature of Link in the Zelda world. Next I found an image that would definitely look like Link to any Zelda fan, and VERY carefully traced and cut the shape in the marbled paper. I didn’t have a second copy of this paper, so I had to be ultra slow and deliberate with every movement. Lastly, I thought it was kind of plain to just have a negative imprint of Link, so I thought it would look cool to add some concentric circles of white on a black paper using water marbling. Overall, I’m delighted with how the final version turned out, and the person I gave it to was as well!
